| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina GLADYS POWELL ATKINSON Posted Tuesday, April 4, 2023 6:00 am MAYESVILLE - Our precious mother, Gladys Powell Atkinson, widow of Melvin Cecil Atkinson Sr., departed her earthly home on Saturday, April 1, 2023. Born on April 23, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Herbert L. and Lillie Scott Powell. As a child, she lived in the town of Lynchburg, where she continued to visit each year at homecoming. She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church in Sumter. Mom loved to sew and often made blankets and bibs for the elderly. She also loved embroidery, and we have beautiful examples of her work. She always had kind and encouraging words for everyone. She was a friend to all she met. She is survived by one son, Melvin C. "Rusty" Atkinson Jr. (Wanda); a daughter, Patricia Miles; a son-in-law, Charles Burns; a brother, Coley Powell; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Neta Burns; a son, Jacky Smith; four sisters, Thelma, Elise, Modena and Ramona; and two brothers, Herbert L. Powell Jr. and Baby Boy Giles. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Kevin Massey and the Rev. Bennie Barwick. Burial will be in Wells Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Melvin Atkinson III, Ashley Atkinson Sr., Cody Atkinson, Todd Miles, Steve Miles and Tony Burns. Ronnie Burns will serve as an honorary pallbearer. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home. We would like to express our appreciation to Daisy, Betty, Debbie, Courtney and Carolyn with Prisma Health Tuomey Hospice for the excellent care, love and compassion you gave our mom, and to Mrs. Sue for the time you so graciously gave. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to New Salem Baptist Church, 2500 W. Oakland Ave., Sumter, SC 29154.
