| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina THOMAS PERRIN JONES Posted Thursday, June 13, 2024 5:00 pm Dr. Thomas Perrin Jones, 75, husband of Mary Virginia “Jeanie” Ridgill Jones, died Wednesday, June 12, 2024. Born in Richmond, Virginia, he was a son of the late Wallie Bernard Jones and Lois Cogburn Jones. Tommy was reared in the Pinewood community and earned his undergraduate degree at the University of South Carolina, where he played baseball, and his Doctor of Dental Medicine at The Medical University of South Carolina. He practiced dentistry in Sumter for 48 years, retiring in October of 2023. A devoted father, he coached baseball and basketball teams in the Parks and Recreation Leagues, at Wilson Hall School and Lakewood High School. He had a vibrant and personal relationship with Jesus Christ and was involved in Bible study at First Baptist Church. In all he undertook as a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a coach, a dentist, a friend, he brought definition to total and selfless commitment. Surviving are his wife of Sumter; children, Rick Jones (Katie), Mike Jones (Laura), Jeff Jones (Amy), Russ Jones and Kell Jones (Casey); 10 grandchildren; brothers, Wallie Jones (Marcia) and Dickie Jones (Jill); sister, Millie Pate (John); and brother-in-law, Bennie Ridgill. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Dan Barber and the Rev. Mark Bordeaux officiating. Private burial will be held in Pinewood Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, 107 E. It was rivalry night with Laurence Manning, but there was another reason fans flooded to the ballpark. Throughout the crowd, you could spot hats with the name Tommy Jones, the longtime Baron head coach who led Wilson Hall to five state titles. The legendary coach passed away last June, and the school quickly looked for a way to celebrate his memory. That moment came to fruition on Friday, as they officially dedicated the baseball field to their longtime coach. The Jones family was all on hand for the festivities. His brothers threw and received the first pitch, as longtime Sumter P-15's coach and University South Carolina Athletic Hall of Famer Wallie Jones fired a bullet to his brother Dickey Jones, who also led the prayer ahead of the contest between SCISA rivals. The game that followed provided the packed crowd with more than enough excitement, as Wilson Hall and Laurence Manning needed a full 11 innings to land on a winner. The only spoiler to the evening for the home team was a late five-run inning for LMA, as the Swampcats took home a 9-6 win. Free passes got LMA on the board in the first, as Baron starting pitcher Cooper Scott allowed a run without surrendering a hit. He hit the leadoff batter and walked another before a balk moved runners over. Grainger Powell drove in the night's first run with a groundout before Scott got out of the jam. Wilson Hall found a spark in the second, as a series of defensive miscues opened up the door for the Barons. Cameron Wilsey got the ball rolling with a grounder to third, as an error allowed two runs to score. Owen Meyers then lined a single to center, putting Wilson Hall ahead 3-1. LMA got a run back in the third on a fielder's choice and eventually tied the game with an RBI single from Rory Carter in the fourth. The Barons played a little small ball in the bottom of the inning to regain their lead. Peyton Gilley led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a bunt. A strikeout brought Cooper Hill to the plate with two outs and he singled home a run to put the Barons ahead 4-3. The lead didn't last long, as Laurence Manning knotted up the game in the sixth. A leadoff single by Payton Brown quickly turned into a runner in scoring position, as a steal and an errant throw moved Brown to third. He then came home to score on a sacrifice fly from LMA pitcher Payton Price. Wilson Hall had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the second, as a pair of walks put a runner in scoring position with just one out, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the threat. The rivals were headed to extras. The Barons again had a golden opportunity to put the game away in the eighth, leading off the inning with a walk and a bunt single, but two-straight strikeouts from LMA pitcher Josh Niswonger flipped the momentum and a lineout to center ended the frame. Laurence Manning followed with a one-out double by BJ Balls but couldn't get their speedy leadoff hitter home. The Swampcats then loaded the bases in the 10th, but Balls couldn't get a two-out hit to break the 4-4 tie. The game finally opened up in the 11th. Carson Wilsey walked and hit the first two batters he faced in the top of the frame. Powell then singled home a run before Ray Weston singled to center for another Swampcat run. After a walk, Price singled home another run before a fly ball to center turned into two outs and another LMA run. Carter added another RBI single to end the scoring flurry. Wilson Hall responded in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with two walks and a hit. A two-out walk plated one run before a passed ball got the Barons within three, but a strikeout ended the game, giving LMA a 9-6 win. Niswonger earned the win for LMA, pitching five innings in relief. He allowed two runs on three hits and six walks, striking out eight. Price allowed four runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits and two walks. He struck out 12. Balls led the 'Cats with three hits, while Weston, Price and Carter each added two knocks. Five Barons saw time on the mound in the loss. Carson Wilsey took the loss, allowing three runs on one hit and two walks while getting just two outs. T Jordan allowed one unearned run in four 1/3 innings, striking out seven. Gavin Lamb and Scott each allowed one earned run. Lamb pitched three frames and Scott tossed two.
