Born on May 22, 1931, in Olanta, he was a son of the late Herbert LeRoy and Lillie Marie Scott Powell. He was the owner of Powell's Electric Service. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 30 years of service. He also retired from Civil Service at Shaw Air Force Base. He was a member of Crosswell Baptist Church, the American Legion Post 15 and various camping clubs. He was a Third Degree Mason and a state constable. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Jackie; three children, Lynn Cain (Bill) of Florence, Dennis Powell (Tracy) of Sumter and Penny Atkinson (Bill) of Sumter; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Atkinson of Sumter; a brother, Coley Powell of San Luis Obispo, California; and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Rodney Howard and the Rev. Pete Mixon officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Crosswell Baptist Church, 604 Mathis St., Sumter, SC 29150. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.  [2, 3, 4]
