| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina ERVIN HARWOOD WEATHERLY SR. Posted Saturday, March 7, 2020 6:00 am Ervin Harwood Weatherly Sr., 73, of Sumter, passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2020. He was born on July 3, 1946, in St. Joseph, Missouri, a son of the late Erasmus Ervin and Babette Fellows LeFlore Weatherly. He graduated from Edmunds High School, where he was voted MVP and outstanding football blocker. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture from Clemson University, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Kappa Epsilon fraternities and the ROTC. Eager to learn and achieve, he became a Triple Eagle Scout and earned all Bronze, Silver and Gold Palms and a 2nd Bronze, Silver and Gold with 65 merit badges, which he diligently hand sewed himself. The scout commissioner stated, "He had never awarded a scout with this honor of Triple Eagle 6!" Harwood then established and sponsored Scout Troop 347 with nine boys with no experience and molded them into winning first place presidential award at a major scout jamboree and remained scout master until 1986. He was announced into the Hall of Fame of Sumter County. He was also a policeman and served in the United States Army in Europe as a groundsman for "Modern Voluntary Army." He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam era. He later established his own business of grain handling equipment. He was president and founder of Sumter Classic Soccer, taught masonry at Sumter Area Technical College and was a very dedicated Sunday school teacher. Harwood literally drove nails before he even learned to walk. He was a brick mason with projects still standing strong in Sumter today. His passion was taking his family camping and sailing and often dared you to a game of chess. He leaves behind a devoted wife of 50 years, Dianne; daughter, Babette Weatherly Lovejoy (Peanut); son, Harwood Weatherly Jr. (Maggie); the two absolute loves of his life (grandchildren), Cooper Harwood and Madalyn Grace Weatherly; and a brother, Mason Clark Weatherly Sr. He was predeceased by his sister, Linda Babette Weatherly; and a brother, Whitney Curtiss Weatherly. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at First Church of God in Sumter. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America Troop 339 at American Legion Post 15, where he and his brothers earned their Eagle Scout or the Shriners Hospital of the Carolinas, where his brother, Whitney Weatherly was a March of Dimes baby.
