Wessinger Sr.), age 98, passed away November 1, 2010, at Hospice Savannah. Eliza was born in 1912 to Elias Whilden Nettles Sr. and Lucy Mellette Nettles in Wedgefield, S.C. She was educated in the Sumter County schools and graduated from Limestone College, Gaffney, S.C. Following graduation, she taught school at the original Irmo High School in Irmo, S.C., and later at the South Carolina School for Girls where she rose to the rank of principal. A faithful member of Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Columbia, S.C., since 1947, she was one of the first female members of the Church Council and served as president of the Women of the Church. Active in family, community, and church affairs, she was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Eliza was predeceased by her husband James, and their son, James Bryson Wessinger Jr. She was also predeceased by her parents and her siblings: E.W. Nettles, Jr., Louise McLaurin, Margaret Crumpton and Robert M. Nettles Sr. Survivors include her son, Dr. William Nettles Wessinger and his wife, Karen Kennickell Wessinger, of Savannah; her daughter-in-law, Cynthia Bopp Wessinger (Mrs. J.B. Wessinger Jr.) of Greensboro, N.C.; grandchildren: James B. Wessinge, III and his wife, Barbara; Robert D. Wessinger; John P. Wessinger; Lucy M.P. Wessinger; William C.D. Wessinger; two great-grandchildren: Liz Ann and James Wessinger; and a number of nieces and nephews. A gracious Southern lady, displaying love and warmth for all, she remained faithful to her Christian beliefs and values until the end. A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, November 5, 2010, in St. Michael's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Irmo. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1715 Bull Street in Columbia. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Columbia, the Memorial Health Foundation of Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah or to Hospice Savannah.
