There was always music in the home as his father was the choir director at Aldersgate Methodist Church and mother played the piano. At the age of 5, he was enrolled in piano lessons. He took piano until the 11th grade. He attended kindergarten and upon the graduation ceremony, he was given small crash cymbals to play with the rhythm band. In the 5th grade at Willow Drive Elementary School, he played the snare drum in the elementary band and loved it. He continued to take piano lessons and played drums in the Alice Drive Junior High School band. His eight, ninth, and tenth grade years were spent at Thomas Sumter Academy. Jay pleaded with this parents and promised them that he would get a college scholarship if they would consent and allow him to go to Sumter High School where he wanted to march in the SHS Band. His parents consented and he did get a scolarship to the University of South Carolina where he majored in music for three years. He changed his major to business and graduated in 1980. He immediately began a career in management with Milliken and Co. Cushman Mill in Williamston, South Carolina. There he met Vickie Smith and a year later got married. Offered employmnet at Becton Dickinson in Sumter, Jay and Vickie moved back to Sumter in 1982. Jay has worked for Becton Dickinson, Sumter Electric Rewinding (where he furthered his education with a Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering), and Giant Resource Recovery (where he furthered his education with a Masters degree n Human Resource Management) and is currently the Manager of the Chemical Division. Jay and Vickie have two sons - Grey, 23, who is pursuing his Master’s degree in music at the University of Southern Mississippi and Josh, 21, who is pursuing his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from the University of South Carolina. Jay has played various percussion for many churches and has been a member of the Sumter Bands, USC Marching Band, USC Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Band, Concert Bands, South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra, Sumter County Community Band, Sumter County Community Jazz Band, and with the variety band - Brandy. Jay’s parents impressed Christian values on their sons. He gave his life to the Lord through a Bailey Smith revival (sermon on the wheat and the tares). Jay has attended First Baptist Church, Sumter, Sc; Calvary Baptist Church, Williamston, SC; Crosswell Baptist Church, Sumter, SC; and Alice Drive Baptist Church, Sumter, SC. He has been the choir director for Crosswell Baptist Church and is presently the interim Worship Leader at First Baptist Church. “Jesus has blessed me in awesome ways---family, friends, employers, talents, etc. Music is my passion. View Tribute Book James Grey “Jay” Shealy, Jr., 66, husband of Vickie Smith Shealy, died Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at Lexington Medical Center. Born October 9, 1957, in Sumter, he was a son of the late James Grey “Jim” Shealy, Sr. and the late Mary Sue Ross Shealy. He was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church. He was employed by Nova Molecular Technology and by multiple Harley-Davidson dealerships as a riding instructor. Survivors include his wife of 42 years; two sons, James Grey Shealy, III (Sara Marie) of Sumter and Joshua Lee Shealy (Hannah Grace) of Easley; two grandchildren, Emerson Grace Shealy and Scarlett Marie Shealy; and two brothers, Steve Shealy (Carole) of Springfield, GA and Matt Shealy (Jennifer) of Indianapolis, IN. Jay was a Godly man and a loving husband, father and grandfather (Pops) to his family and friends. He never let a day go by that he did not tell you that he loved you and every-one knew it was truly from his heart. Jay was a very talented musician and used his God given talent to spread God’s love through music ministry at Crosswell Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, Trinity United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Grace Baptist Church, and Alice Drive Baptist Church. His musical experiences spanned a wide range of performances. Prime Time, Brandy, Sumter Little Theater, among others as well as arranging and con-ducting the Sumter Singing Christmas Tree. Jay had a passion for spreading the love of Jesus to his family, work friends and motorcycle friends. He made it a life goal to ride all 50 states from the seat of a Harley Davidson motorcycle and HE DID IT!!!! Jay received such joy at seeing God’s beautiful country with his two sons, brother, nephew and very dear friend. But the very greatest joy he received was from his two precious granddaughters, Emerson Grace and Scarlett Marie. He was so looking forward to loving his third granddaughter, Violet Sage in July.
