A master electrician and member of the State Municipal Electrical Board (1960-1995), he taught journeyman and master electrician courses at Carolina Tech College, Extended Education (1965-1995). He was especially proud of his long affiliation with the city of Sumter, dating back to 1928, when he volunteered as a firefighter. Chief electrician and electrical inspector for many years, he was retained as a consultant after retiring in 2001. An avid fisherman and storyteller, he was a member of Brohn Lake Club. He often said that some of the happiest times of his life were fishing with his grandchildren at Cantey Bay, North Santee. He loved to cook catfish and chicken stew for family, friends, colleagues and civic groups. His hush puppies were considered to be the best by many happy diners. Another popular specialty, DuCom beef chili, was a prized and secret recipe handed down from his father, who used to own a hot dog stand in downtown Sumter. [3, 8, 9] |
