James William Ross, 88, husband of Shirley Way Ross, died on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, at Prisma Health Richland Hospital. Born on Sept. 12, 1934, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Robert Dalton Ross and Katie Boykin Ross. He was a graduate of Hillcrest High School, Newberry College and the Armed Forces Staff College. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after more than 24 years of service and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Ross owned and operated Ross Construction. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and America Legion Post 15. Survivors in addition to his wife include four sons, James W. Ross Jr. (Mary Ann), Michael L. Ross, Jeffery Allen Ross (Lori) and John David Ross (Mariah), all of Dalzell; a daughter, Sherrie Ross Mayes (Jimmy) of Murrells Inlet; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Annie DuBose of Sumter and Carolyn Apperson of Jacksonville, Florida. He was preceded in death by one sister and seven brothers. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday at Alice Drive Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Clay Smith and the Rev. Tim Brown officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jason Ross, Ryan Ross, Matthew Ross, Ryan Conyers, Chase Goins and Gene Altman. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday at Alice Drive Baptist Church.
