By RANDY BURNS Item Staff Writer rburns@theitem.com Jenny Tallon, a former member of the Lee County School Board, is battling progressive cancer. Now living in Camden, the 55-year-old Tallon was diagnosed with lung cancer in April 2008. An intensive regimen of 28 treatments of chemotherapy and 54 radiation treatments eliminated all evidence of cancer, according to scans taken in December. But by March, Tallon's pain had returned and the three-month evaluation confirmed what she suspected. The cancer had returned. Her lungs were cancer-free, but it had spread to the adrenal gland and kidney. The growth on the elbow was bone cancer. Tallon soon began another round of radiation treatment. During this time, she fell at home and broke her arm. Tests and scans revealed another cancerous tumor in the bone at the break in her arm. She has recently had surgery to repair the bone and remove the tumor. Doctors could only remove half of it. After multiple rounds of chemo, she now travels five days a week to Sumter to receive radiation on her arm and adrenal gland. Her prognosis is not good. Yet family and friends are amazed at Tallon's attitude and determination. Known for her outgoing personality, Tallon spends as much time smiling and laughing as she does crying. Lana Howell said that through it all, her mother-in-law has managed to remain Jenny Tallon. "Cancer has not defined Jenny as a person," Howell said. "To listen to her speak and to hear her laugh, you would never know she is battling for her life every day. To our kids, she is the same Gan (Grandma) and to us the same loving mother and mother-in-law. It is so hard to describe how much we love her." While Tallon continues to fight cancer, she also has had to deal with dwindling financial resources. Tallon's only income is Social Security disability, and that is enough some months to provide the rent, utilities, food and expenses for herself and her 18-year-old son Wyatt, a senior at Camden High School and a member of the Bulldogs football team. And some months, it is not enough. In July, she learned her medical treatment had taken all of her allowable insurance coverage, which is $250,000. She has no life insurance. She has been denied Medicaid and has been put on a two-year waiting list for Medicare. "We have exhausted all options," said daughter-in-law Brandy Croft-Howell. For several weeks, family and friends have been organizing a benefit for Tallon to help buy medicine and pay the bills. They recently told Tallon about the benefit, and she has "come over to accepting and appreciating the offer for help," Tallon said. "I felt like I've helped people when I had resources," she said. "And now I need help. But it's not for me. I don't want to leave a pile of debt for my three sons, two daughters-in-law and four grandchildren. Right now, I need help paying my bills and to pay for my funeral. I have no life insurance. I don't want my children to worry about how they're going to bury me." Son Donovan Howell said the family needs money to make sure his mother receives the treatment she needs. He estimates the monthly cost of medicine is about $1,200. "Right now there's no cure for her progressive cancer, but there are miracles," he said. "My primary concern is to make sure we are able to pay for her prescription medicine. I'm not worried about the funeral. We're still fighting. I'm not worried a bit about the funeral." Son Denny Howell hopes the benefit will take some of the frustration and worry from his mother. "It's our hope that this benefit will give her some relief," he said. The organizers of the benefit have turned to Lee County residents for help. Tallon lived in Lee County for almost 20 years, was married to the late J.W. Tallon for eight years and served on the school board for six years. "Lee County is still my home," she said. Tallon's proudest moment on the board was the work she did in 1997 to pass the school bond referendum, which led to the construction of Lee Central High School. "Looking back, that was the right thing to do," she said. "We worked hard, but it was worth it." Robert Peoples, owner of B&R Lumber Co. in Bishopville, served with Tallon on the school board. "For Jenny, serving on the school board was a labor of love," Peoples said. "She put her heart into the school district. I hope now the people of Lee County will reach out and support her in her time of need." The Chicken Bog Benefit for Jenny Tallon will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at NBSC on East Church Street. BY RANDY BURNS rburns@theitem.com A former member of the Lee County Board of Education and a leader in the community effort to build Lee Central High School has passed away. Jenny Tallon, 56, died Wednesday night at home after a long battle with cancer. Tallon served on the school board in the mid-1990s, and was active in the 1997 campaign to pass a bond referendum for a new countywide high school. Robert Peoples, who served as chairman of the school board during Tallon's tenure on the board, said she was a dedicated and committed board member. "Jenny worked as hard if not harder than anybody to pass the bond referendum," Peoples said. "She took off of work and made phone calls, knocked on doors and would tell everybody why the county needed a new high school." Tallon was always prepared, Peoples said. "She took meticulous notes," he said. "And Jenny would take time to study the issues." Queenie Boyd also served on the board with Tallon. "Jenny worked hard for public education while she was on the board," Boyd said. "She would listen to people's concerns. She was one of many people who worked hard for the new high school." Lisa Whiteaker, of Bishopville, said Tallon always brought joy to any occasion. "Jenny could throw the best parties," Whiteaker said. "She always made people happy." Tallon was an important supporter of Special Olympics in Lee County, Whiteaker said. Whiteaker's son, Charlie Whiteaker, was a member of the 1999 Bishopville High School Special Olympics team that participated in the 1999 Special Olympics World Games in Raleigh, N.C. "Anything Jenny ever did for the community, she did 100 percent," Whiteaker said. "She was dedicated to Special Olympics. She donated money. She went to Raleigh and took the entire team and volunteers out to dinner. She went to the competition. Jenny was fantastic." Tallon was devoted to her family, Whiteaker said. "I think part of her legacy will be her three sons," she said. "She loved them very much." Over the years, Whiteaker said Tallon had become a good friend. "I have lost a loving friend and sister," Whiteaker said. "I will miss her very much." Services will be announced by Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home. --- Randy Burns Posted in News, Local news on Friday, April 30, 2010 [1, 2, 3, 4] | |
