Wright Jr. Edward Edwards Wright Jr., age 92, passed away at his home and joined the Lord and his loved ones on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013. Ed’s devotion to his family, friends and church was expressed with love through his remarkable character and gracious lifestyle. He was a caring husband of nearly 69 years; a supportive father and grandfather; and a sincere friend. We celebrate the wonderful life he shared with each of us. Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Burns Wright of Sumter, in May of this year. He is survived by his daughters, Emily Johnson (Huey E.) and Leah Burton, both of Sumter; his grandchildren, William Burton of Sumter, David Durham (Stefanie) of Sumter, Lisa Phillips (Brian) of Colorado and Corey Johnson (Nora) of Florida; his great-grandchildren, Sarah Emily Durham of Sumter, Autumn Phillips, Hunter Phillips, Rainey Phillips, London Phillips and Skylar Phillips, all of Colorado. He graduated from Clemson College in 1942 with a degree in electrical engineering and was a member of the Senior Platoon. During World War II, Ed served as a first lieutenant for three-and-a-half years. He attended Harvard University and M.I.T. for studies in radar technology. Subsequent to his military duty, he returned to complete 35 years of service with AT&T. On July 13, 1944, Ed and Emily married, and their devotion to each other remained a rare treasure. Ed has been an active member of First Baptist Church of Sumter, where he served as a deacon, elder, past Sunday school director, past church clerk, past Sunday school teacher and greeter on Sunday. He was a member of Kiwanis for 21 years, served as the president of the Sumter Chapter, and was honored by being elected as a Hixon Fellow. Ed also demonstrated his devotion to his family and community by serving as president of the Chamblee High School PTA in Georgia, where he was active in numerous school activities. Prior to her passing, Ed’s wife wrote this excellent tribute to him: “Ed dearly loved his Lord, his family, his career and the communities in which he lived.” Ed was a gentleman and unselfish in his caring and sharing of his time. He was a rare individual that will be greatly missed. His family wishes to thank the many individuals who so lovingly assisted with his care this past year. In particular, we thank Dr. Hugh Stoddard, the Rev. Charles Clanton, Evone, Mary Lou, Vanessa, Cecelia, Tempie, Glenda and Katie for the excellent care given to Ed.
