  HIST	CHARLES D. RAY Charles Douglas Ray, 59, husband of Joan Sims Ray, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born in Sumter, he was a son of Charles L. Ray and Mary Ella Benenhaley Ray. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from the S.C. Department of Corrections and was currently a farmer. He attended Springbank Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of Sumter; his parents of Sumter; a son, Richard L. Ray and his wife, Wendy, of Sumter; a daughter, Julie S. Ray of Sumter; two sisters, Mary Barbara Ray of Columbia and Patricia McLeod of Sumter; and a granddaughter, Reilly Grace Ray. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Springbank Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert Alderman officiating. Burial will be in the Springbank Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Larry Hood, Andy Hood, Don Hood, Hastings James, Lorand Batten III and Joe Kelly. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Springbank Baptist Church, 5725 Fish Road, Dalzell, SC 29040 or to the American Heart Association, 320 Gervais St., Suite 300, Columbia, SC 29260-6604. Ray. Mr. Ray was a member of Springbank Baptist Church. He retired from the U.S. Civil Service and was a retired small business owner. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia R. McLeod of Sumter and Barbara Ray of Cayce; four grandchildren, Richard Ray (Lisa), Christin Dutcher (Ryan), Julie Ray and Brittany McLeod; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Lowery of Sumter and Bertie Jean Noordhoeck of Oakland, Neb.; and a daughter-in-law, Joan S. Ray of Sumter. He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Ray. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Springbank Baptist Church, 5725 Fish Road, Dalzell, with the Rev. Steve Miller and Dr. Robert Alderman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Ryan and Christin Dutcher, 3265 Raffield Court, Dalzell.
