Born on Nov. 4, 1939, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Roy P. Howell Sr. and Beulah Juanita Durham Howell. She worked as a licensed practical nurse and retired from Briggs Nursing Home in Silver. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Survivors include six children, Ruth Hughes Riley, Joye Elizabeth Hughes, Joseph "Jody" G. Hughes Jr. (Tammy), Gayle Hughes Shirah (Jimmy), Jeffrey Grant Hughes (Cindy) and John Allen Hughes (Stephanie); 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Deyerl Squires; a brother, Roy P. Howell Jr.; and two sisters, Patricia Ann Howell and Carolyn Howell. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the Brewington Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Brandon Hughes, Travis Wilson, Andy Vorhis, Justin Vorhis, Cody Squires and Jessie Hughes. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, Gayle Shirah, 4250 Muriel St. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.  [1, 3, 4, 7]
