RIEL Posted Friday, August 18, 2017 6:00 am Eloise Green Riel, 100, widow of James "Jimmie" Daniel Riel II, died on Aug. 17, 2017, at McElveen Manor. Born on Oct. 28, 1916, in Shiloh, she was a daughter of the late William Wherry and Meta Elizabeth (Keels) Green. She was valedictorian of Turbeville High School. She attended Columbia College from 1933 to 1934 and Sumter Tech from 1964 to 1966. She is survived by two daughters, Susan Elizabeth Riel Silverman (Jason) of Rock Hill and Deborah "Debbie" Louise Riel Nix (Dave) of Dalzell; three grandsons, Andrew James Nix (Stacy) of Savannah, Georgia, Scott Clinton Nix (Meghan) of Charleston and Alexander James Silverman of Tokyo, Japan; four great-granddaughters, Marian Elizabeth Nix, Claudia Rollins Nix, Caroline Wherry Nix and Annabelle Rose Nix; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and six sisters. Eloise was actively involved in the PTA, Women's Christian Society, the United Methodist Women and the Girl Scouts of America. She received many honors including the First Woman Estimator for General Construction in South Carolina, entries in Who's Who of American Women and The World Who's Who of Women, and the Edith Myers' Volunteer Extraordinaire Award from the Sumter Volunteers. Eloise and Jimmie worshipped at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Shiloh United Methodist Church (Eloise's childhood church) and, most recently, Dalzell United Methodist Church. Eloise truly enjoyed her family and many friends. She loved to go antiquing and her home was full of many treasures. She could cook an amazing cheese bread, delicious squash casseroles and perfect steaks. She literally baked thousands of chocolate chip cookies for everyone and probably only ate two of them. Her pecan tarts were fondly known throughout the state. It would be very difficult to find someone more generous and compassionate than Eloise. She never met a stranger and her 100 years were full of love and joy. She had a sweet spirit and a huge servant's heart. Even in death, Eloise continues to give to others as her final request was to donate her body to the Medical University of South Carolina in order to further medical research. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Dalzell United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 3 to 4 p.m. Memorials may be made to Dalzell United Methodist Church, 3330 Black River Road, Dalzell, SC 29040; Leukemia and Lymphoma Society 107 Westpark Blvd., Ste. 150, Columbia, SC 29210; Salvation Army, 16 Kendrick St.; Sumter Crops, SC; or a charity of one's choice.
