| HIST | In 1889, at the time of his marriage, George lived in Georgetown, SC and had a home there. It is said that he was engaged in the timber business somewhere in Williamsburg County around Lane, SC which isn't very far from Georgetown. In fact, George's first son may have been named after a man in the timber business from that location. In August of 1891, George, and his brothers, purchased land in Sumter and Clarendon Counties from James H. Aycock. This tract of land was originally the "McElveen Property". Philip McElveen was George's Grandfather, the father of his mother, Dolly McElveen Stone. The land evidently fell behind in taxes and was taken by the local authorities. The three brothers, George, Sam, and Philip, came together and paid what was owed on the property. This land is where the set up their own little town. They all lived on adjoining farms down what is now Stone Road. These farms were off of Hwy 15 out of Sumter about 12 miles to Packsville, SC. From Hwy 15, turn onto Stone Road. The first farm was George's, second Phillip's, and third Sam's. They had their own school house and saw mill. It was a town within itself created by these three brothers who had 29 children between them. In January of 1893, George purchased land from his brothers, Samuel and Philip Stone. In 1902, George and his cousin I.T. Davis purchased a tract of land in Sumter County. In 1903, it appears that George purchased I. T. Davis' land back for himself. (See the land deeds below). George McDuffie appears in the 1900 SC Census in Sumter County, Privateer Township. His occupation is a Farmer. He is 40 years old, being born in May, 1860. His wife Martha A. is 24, born in January, 1876 (this age and birth year are wrong for Martha). Dolly Stone, George's mother, is living with them. She is 66 and was born in October, 1833. Children living at home are Dayton Bryan, age 9, born March, 1891, Henry G., age 7, born January, 1893, Dolly, age 4, born August, 1895, Isaac age 1 born August, 1898, and nephew I.T. Davis, age 26, born March, 1874. George's family appears again in the 1910 SC Census in Sumter County, Privateer Township. He is age 49; Martha age 38; Dayton B. age 18; Henry age 17; Dollie age 14; isaac M. age 12, Richmond age 10; Ruby age 8; Thelma age 6; Wallace T. age 3; and Sophie age 1. George and Martha died with months of each other of typhoid fever. Four of the youngest children were put into the Connie Maxwell Orphanage. George's brother Samuel, or Philip, bought George's land since the children could not keep it up and were about to loose it. *** Computerized by Lonne Stone Heath Original at S. C.
