He was present at Company Muster Roll. Muster Roll, March and April, 1864: Pvt. in Co. A, 23rd Regt SC Inf. This document states that he was enlisted in Columbia, SC on Oct. 20, 1863 by Ad't. Richardson. Remarks that he was transferred to Co. C March 1, 1864. Muster Roll, March and April, 1864: Pvt. in Co. C, 23rd Regt SC Inf. Last Paid by Capt. Lemons to time Dec. 31, 1863. He was absent at Computer Muster Roll. Remarks state that he was absent without leave. (Possibly due to the trial noted in his Mother-in-law's (Harriet McElveen) notes). Muster Roll, March to June 30, 1864: 4th Sgt in Co. C, 23 Regt SC Inf. He Re-enlisted Feb. 1, 1864 in Columbia by Capt. Richardson for War Period. He was last paid by Capt. Lemmons for time Dec. 31, 1863. He was present at Company Muster Roll. Remarks say he was transferred from Co. A, 23rd S.C.V, 1 Feb., 1864. Reduced to ranks May 1, 1864. Muster Roll, July 1, to October 31, 1864: Pvt in Co. C, 23rd Regt SC Inf. Remarks say that he was killed July 2, 1864, in trenches of Petersburg, VA. The 23rd Regiment South Carolina Infantry was formed November 15, 1861, by the addition of three companies to Hatch's Battalion Coast Rangers, South Carolina Volunteers, which consisted of seven companies. The regiment was then composed of four local defense companies which had been organized for the war and six volunteer companies organized for twelve months. It was re-organized under the Conscript Act in May, 1862, the company officers being elected May 9, 1862, and the regimental officers May 24, 1862. | |
