Borry, 92, died peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at Kindred Hospital in Charleston. Born in 1919, in Novocherkassk, Russia, he was a son of the late Boris Cousminer Borry and Olga Cheramisova Borry Cahill. At the age of 3, his family immigrated from Russia through Ellis Island shortly after the Russian Revolution and resided in Long Island, N.Y. He attended Oyster Bay High School, where he was an outstanding student and athlete in football, basketball and track. He graduated from New York University with a bachelor of architecture degree. He later became a registered architect in South Carolina and Florida. He began his career in 1940 with a large engineering firm in New York City managing parts of high rise vertical construction projects. During World War II from 1943-1946, he was a second lieutenant with the Army Corp of Engineers in Oak Ridge, Tenn., where his work was essential to the production of the atom bomb. After completing his Army service in 1947, he moved to Miami Beach, Fla., where he met his first wife, Dorothy, whom he was married to for 14 years and was the mother of his two children before her untimely death in 1964. While in Miami Beach, he worked for two architectural firms before opening his own architectural practice. By 1953, he and Dorothy moved to Fayetteville, N.C., and later to Sumter in 1954 with the Ninth Air Force Headquarters as chief of the operations and maintenance for their air bases. In 1958, he became the deputy base civil engineer and a member of the base master planning board at Shaw Air Force Base. His combined career service at Shaw was 29 years, where he is credited with overseeing years of multi-million dollar development and construction projects. He retired from Shaw and went back to work in 1980 with James, Durant, Matthews & Shelly, Architects. He oversaw the quality control over construction of several schools and buildings in the state, including being most proud of Sumter High School and Patriot Hall. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Oswego, where he married his second wife, Mary Catherine Cubbage Borry of Sumter. They enjoyed a long 37-year marriage before her death in 2005. After retirement, he enjoyed golfing with the Godfathers for many years. He and Mary enjoyed their scheduled workouts with friends at the YMCA. Several days a week they joined their friends called the lunch bunch. In the evenings with Mary or with close friends, they enjoyed movies, crossword puzzles, cross-stitching, sporting events and Sumter P-15's baseball. He was twice married, first to the late Dorothy Lannin Borry and then later to the late Mary Catherine Cubbage Borry. Surviving are one son, Brian Borry of Charleston; one daughter, Diane Connelly (Sidney) of Goose Creek; three grandchildren, Paul Connelly, Jennifer Connelly and Carter Borry. He enjoyed a close, special friendship in Charleston with Michelle Long and Sara Jackson. The family wishes to thank the medical staff at MUSC and Kindred Hospital for their superior health care and attention. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Bethel United Methodist Church in Oswego with the Rev. Curtis Wells officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sumter YMCA or Bethel United Methodist Church in Oswego. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.
