Betty Garris was pronounced dead at the scene from the fire in her mobile home on Browning Ridge Drive that occurred about 1:30 p.m. on May 31, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker confirmed. Sumter County Fire Department Division Chief Joey Duggan said the first truck arrived two to three minutes after the call came in and found her deceased inside the living room along with a cat and a dog. Duggan said there was only light smoke showing when they arrived and that the damage was contained to that one room. A view from the outside of the home does not show any apparent fire damage. Duggan said the victim's husband reportedly came home to discover the scene and called 911. A cause of the fire is not yet known, but the fire department, Sumter County Sheriff's Office and coroner's office was on scene Friday investigating. Coroner Baker said an autopsy will be performed Tuesday morning at MUSC in Charleston. Garris's death marks the first fire fatality of 2019. "This has been one of the worst four days I can remember," Baker said Friday. The coroner's office responded to two traffic fatalities this week, one on Tuesday and one on Wednesday, a homicide in the city on Thursday and this fatal house fire on Friday. While this week's volume of unexpected deaths is not typical, the office was loaded down with work, as they also respond to residents who die of natural causes. Baker's coroner's office consists of only him, a chief deputy coroner and a part-time employee who transports bodies between Sumter and Charleston for autopsies. Both legislators in Columbia and the Sumter County Council denied funding Baker's request for an additional position, with the delegation saying they will have money available next year. 82-year-old woman dies in house fire Posted Sunday, June 2, 2019 6:00 am BY KAYLA ROBIN kayla@theitem.com An 82-year-old woman died in her home during a fire Friday afternoon near Cains Mill and Kolb roads.
