Born Feb. 16, 1946, in Manning, he was a son of the late Ben and Virgie Mitchum Ward. He was a carpenter and a U.S. Army veteran. He was of the Baptist faith. He was formerly married to Shirley Arrants Ward. Surviving are a son, Joseph Thomas "Jay" Ward Jr. and Tammy of Manning; a daughter, Rhonda Ward of Sumter; a brother, Edward Ward of St. Stephen; a sister, Cecile Heath of St. Stephen; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Kevin Cribb officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tripp White, Corey Blackmon, Henry Ard, Bill Miller, Justin Still, and Frankie Craven. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Tony and Bobby Ward. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. Stephens Funeral Home & Crematory, 304 N.
