Coward Serena Lane Coward, 92, widow of Joseph W. "Joe" Coward, died Sunday, July 31, 2011, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late Stuart D. and Bessie Norton Lane. She graduated from Lynchburg High School and Marlboro Business College in Bennettsville. She worked at the Williamsburg County Courthouse. Later she was employed as a case worker for the Lee County Council on Aging and enjoyed helping elderly people. Mrs. Coward was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church and a former member of Lynchburg Baptist Church. Grandma Coward's greatest love was Jesus Christ and her family. She taught Bible stories and Christian principles to all of her children and grandchildren. She expected the best of all of us. We will always treasure her wisdom and advice, her wit and humor, and the love she gave to our family. Survivors include a son, John Coward (Cindy) of Sumter; two daughters, Laura Burgess (Jimmy) of Kingstree and Stella Rogers (Elvin) of Sumter; three granddaughters, Sara Beth Godwin, Gayle Rogers and Lori Coward; three grandsons, Wendell Rogers, Steven Burgess and Mark Coward; 11 great-grandchildren, Heather Cromer, Hannah Hogue, Amy and Aaron Rogers, Candice Powell, Christopher Coward, Hayden and Parker Coward, Scott Burgess, and Faith and Hope Burgess; a great-great-granddaughter, Stella Lane Cromer; a sister, Bliss Mooneyhan of Houston, Texas; and a brother, Stewart L. Lane (Lib) of Sumter. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Danny Burgess; a great-granddaughter, April McKenzie; a sister, Izola Kennedy; and two brothers, Joe N. Lane and R.P. Lane. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jerry Watson and the Rev. Bennie Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Lynchburg Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Rogers. The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Mayes DuBose and staff for the excellent care given to Mrs. Coward.
