| HIST | Erlene S. Bethea | Visit Guest Book MCCOLL - Mrs. Erlene S. Bethea, age 77, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2012, in Morrison Manor in Laurinburg, NC, after an illness. Born in Little Mountain, SC, November 13, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Killian Shealy and Mary Elizabeth Lindler Shealy. She was a retired educator, having taught at Clio High School with over 30 years of dedicated service. After retiring, she worked for Dixiana Mills in Dillon as a mailroom supervisor. She was a graduate of both Little Mountain High School and Newberry College. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in McColl, a member of the United Methodist Women, a volunteer for Hospice of Marlboro County and was recognized many times as volunteer of the year. She was also a member of the Marlboro Historical Association and a member of the Carlisle Book Club. Mrs. Erlene played the organ for Main Street United Methodist Church and Pine Grove United Methodist Church as well as many other McColl churches. Surviving are her loving and devoted husband of 51 ½ years, William N. "Bill" Bethea Jr. of the home; a son, W. Michael Bethea and his wife, Lori, of Charlotte, NC; a daughter, Michele Bethea Wright and her husband, Mike, of Matthews, NC; a sister, Nettie Sligh of Laurinburg, NC; three grandchildren, Alexa Bethea of Charlotte, NC, Kathryn and Killian Wright, both of Matthews, NC. A graveside funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, in Roselawn Cemetery in McColl. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church in McColl. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at Main Street United Methodist Church. Mrs. Bethea was preceded in death by her parents listed above; a brother, Henry Shealy; and four sisters, Mamie Lou Rye, Ruby Shealy, Martha Kesterson, and twin sister, Allene Horton. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Bruce and Mary Leroy Stanton Scholarship Fund, 210 N. Main Street, McColl, SC 29570; or Agape Hospice, PO Box 474, Bennettsville, SC 29512; or Hospice of Scotland County, P.O. Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353.
