GILBERT Mrs. Elzona Coleman Gilbert, 76, widow of Clarence Gilbert, departed this life Tues., Feb. 24, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. She was born March 5, 1932, in Newport News, Va., a daughter of the late Daniel and Marie Sumpter Coleman. At an early age, the family moved to Sumter to live with the grandparents. Mrs. Gilbert attended the Sumter County public schools and as a youth, joined Wayman Chapel AME Church where she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She later moved her membership to Reese Chapel AME Church (later known as St. Michael AME Church). As a member of St. Michael, she was a dedicated servant, serving as Steward Pro Tem and Mother of the Church. She was the biological mother of many children and the adoptive mother and grandmother of many others she met throughout her life. Some of her greatest joy was volunteering as a grandmother to the children at the neighborhood community center. She leaves to cherish her loving memories, three sons, Clarence Jr., David and Peter Gilbert, all of Wedgefield; seven daughters, Viola (Mark) Pierson, Katherine (Roosevelt) Whiting and Annie Gilbert, all of Sumter; Mamie, Estelle and Georgianna, all of Wedgefield, and Elizabeth Gilbert of Charlotte; 19 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; three sisters, Ruth Jackson, Della (Johnnie) Davis and Emma Garrison, all of Bridgeport, Conn.; one aunt, four sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Salem Chapel & Heritage Center (formerly Trinity Missionary Baptist Church) 101 S. Salem St., Sumter, with the Rev. Franklin Scott officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jerome McCray, eulogist, the Rev. Emmanuel Davis, the Rev. E. Black, the Rev. E. Joe and the Rev. Dorothy Maple. Interment will follow in St. Michael cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. today for viewing until the hour of service. The family will receive friends at the home, 5410 Cane Savannah Road, Wedgefield, SC 29168.
