Sumter man arrested in Dalzell home killing; deputies say he gave false name on scene SUMTER ITEM FILE PHOTO Posted Tuesday, August 30, 2022 1:51 pm BY SHELBIE GOULDING shelbie@theitem.com A 40-year-old man was arrested in connection with the death of a Sumter man who was found unresponsive inside a bedroom closet in Dalzell. On Aug. 19, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house on Antelope Drive after receiving a call that a man was inside unresponsive. The caller reported he suspected a drug overdose, according to Maj. Randall Stewart, of the sheriff’s office. Richard Preusser, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene, Stewart said. During an investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Sumter County Coroner’s Office, it was found the victim had a gunshot wound to his upper right chest. The autopsy revealed Preusser died from the injury. Stewart said there were two additional people in the home who were identified as the victim's roommates. During questioning, one reportedly gave deputies a false name and was identified as Jason Edward Barnes. Barnes reportedly fled the scene, Stewart said. He was located the following day. During questioning of Barnes, he gave several inconsistent stories and became a suspect in the investigation, Stewart said. A weapon has since been recovered that is believed to be the murder weapon, according to Stewart. On Aug. 29, a warrant was obtained and served on Barnes for charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, Stewart said. Barnes is currently in the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing. Sheriff Anthony Dennis said the incident is believed to be isolated. He praised the work of his officers in quickly making an arrest and expressed gratitude for the good relationship with the Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker and his staff. [2, 3, 4] | |
