Baker Jr. SUMMERTON — Samuel Leland “Buddy” Baker Jr., 85, husband of the late Jean Huffman Baker, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born Jan. 31, 1927, in Charleston, he was a son of the late Samuel Leland Baker Sr. and Bessie Briggs Baker. He was a World War II and U.S. Navy veteran, a graduate of the University of Miami, a retired school teacher and a member of Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church. He played football for Clemson University, Presbyterian College and Florida State. He was a member of the Poker Palace and he loved to eat and meet with friends at the Summerton Diner. He was a kind and generous man loved by all his family and friends, and he will be dearly missed. He is survived by a stepdaughter, Barbara Bauman (Gary) of Key Largo, Fla.; a grandson, John; a special friend, Laurie Sanders and her son, Chase, of Miami, Fla.; three nephews, Henry Baker “Butch” Herlong Sr. and friend, Betty McCall, of Summerton, Samuel Pledger Parker Jr. (Suzi) of Pinopolis and John N. Herlong Jr. (Lyn) of Manning; two nieces, Bette Herlong Warren (Townsend) of McClellanville and Suzanne Norris (Lannie) of Pinopolis; a very special great-great-niece, Lacy Gayle Herlong Timmons; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Emma Baker Herlong Dickson and Camilla Baker Parker. A memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Hodge officiating. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. until the time of service at Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 23 S. Church St., Summerton. The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Robert Eagerton and his staff for the special care and attention that they always gave Buddy.
