GIVENS Jr. Posted Thursday, September 9, 2004 8:00 pm Joseph Charles Givens Jr., musician and teacher, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia. Born July 10, 1948, in Sumter, he was the son of Joseph Charles Givens Sr. and the late Dorothy Ford Givens. "Charles," as he was affectionately called, was raised in the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. He later became a member of Trinity Baptist Church and served Trinity as the church musician, where he established the church's music ministry. Charles was instrumental in forming a community choir in the area and he worked closely with other choirs to include: Ronald Barton Mass Choir, Shiloh Gospel Chorus, Dr. Horton School Chorus, Gospel Workshop at Shaw Air Force Base and Kingfest Celebration. Charles began his early education at Liberty Street Elementary School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1966. After high school, he attended the University of Charleston West Virginia, where in 1970, he earned a bachelor of arts degree in music. Charles moved to Newark, N.J., where he taught for 11 years. In 1984, he received a master's of education degree from South Carolina State College in Orangeburg. In August 1985, Charles began teaching at Scott's Branch High School in Summerton, where he served as a music teacher and choral director. His teaching career spanned 31 years, 19 of which were spent at Scott's Branch High School until his retirement in May 2004. He was formerly employed at the Guaranty Insurance Agency. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Dr. Christine Givens Dixon. Surviving are his father and stepmother, Joseph Charles Givens Sr. and Judge Elizabeth Butler Givens of Sumter; two stepsisters, Angel L. Bagsby of Sumter and Robby O. MacBeth of Atlanta; a stepbrother, James E. Thomas III of Baltimore; a devoted family friend, Dr. Bernice Stukes-Moses; special cousins, Elaine Clemmons, Issac McLeod and Emily (Carl) James. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Larry C. Weston, eulogist, the Rev. Dr. Ronald Barton, Minister Kenneth Choice, Minister Priscilla Loney, evangelist Savitria McFadden and the Rev. Dr. James Stukes. The remains will be placed in the church from noon until the hour of service. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The funeral procession will leave at noon from the residence, 104 Council St., Sumter.
