| HIST | Hamm has fond memories of Sumter Posted Friday, July 28, 2017 6:00 am BY BRUCE MILLS BRUCE@THEITEM.COM For Debbie Hamm, who will become Sumter School District's interim superintendent on Tuesday, it all began in Sumter. After graduating from college in California in 1973, Hamm moved to Sumter because her husband, Steve, had a job here. She taught for a year in the former Sumter School District 2 at the former Eastern Elementary School, which went through the eighth grade at the time, and her principal was R.E. Davis. Today, the elementary school is named after Davis. Hamm said Wednesday that she and her husband of nearly 44 years look back fondly on their time here. "It was not only where I had my first job, but it was where my husband and I lived when we were first married," Hamm said. "We loved our time in Sumter." It was the 1973-74 school year, she said. Hamm said her best memories of being a teacher at the school that year were the school children and also the opportunity to work with Davis. "He was an amazing man, and I am so happy the school was named after him," Hamm said. "We got to know both Mr. Davis and his wife. Part of the fond memory is the privilege of knowing both of them and particularly working with R.E. Davis." After that school year, Hamm and her husband moved to Columbia, where she pursued her master's degree at University of South Carolina. She actually has spent all of her professional career since then in the Columbia area, retiring as superintendent of Richland School District 2 on June 30. More on interim superintendent search process The Sumter School District Board of Trustees interviewed three candidates in executive session at Monday night's special called meeting for the interim superintendent post. The district released information on the other two candidates Thursday. They were Barry Bolen, a former superintendent in Lexington County School District Two in West Columbia, and William Cason, a former superintendent with Valdosta City Schools in Valdosta, Georgia. The board selected Hamm in a unanimous vote Monday after the executive session. According to the district and its attorneys, Hamm will earn "the same daily rate" of pay as retiring Superintendent Frank Baker. That's $797.04 per day or $3,985.20 per week. [2] | |
