| HIST | Pine Gate Renewables launching $3M solar farm project near Manning Biggest benefit to Clarendon will be tax revenue generated from land use, developer says Posted Wednesday, November 6, 2019 6:00 am BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Clarendon County is continuing its venture into the new high-tech, clean energy production realm with a recent announcement of another capital investment by a solar energy facilities developer, according to officials. Pine Gate Renewables, based in Asheville, North Carolina, is investing about $3 million in a solar farm development at a 20-acre site near Manning, county Development Board Executive Director George Kosinski said earlier this week. The site will operate under the name of Bonefish Solar LLC, according to a recent news release from Pine Gate Renewables. Solar panels at the site - which is at the intersection of U.S. 301 and June Burn Road - will produce electrical power from the sun, and, in turn, Pine Gate will sell that power to Duke Energy for electrical use in the greater region, Kosinski said. He said the investment will not necessarily directly generate jobs in Clarendon, but it will create more of a tax base in the form of commercial property taxes collected from the company. "The land switches from agricultural use to manufacturing use, so it goes from 4% assessment to 10.5% assessment," Kosinski said. He added he didn't know exactly how much the increase in property taxes will be annually for the county except to say, "It will be a significant increase from where we are at today." The site will generate 2.8 megawatts of clean energy annually, according to the news release. Kosinski said initial construction began about a month ago, and he expects the site to be fully operational in three to four months - or late February/early March. The clean energy production from the solar farm will mean Duke Energy will need to produce less power from its electric-generation plants, he added. Kosinski said university-level research shows there are no health risks or harmful effects associated with solar power production. [1] | |
