He was having dinner with the School Officials at Frank’s Restaurant in Sumter. He had been Superintendent of the Clarendon School District 2 for 16 years. The District is composed of Schools in the Manning, Alcolu, and Paxville areas. He was born on June 20, 1907 in St. Charles, a son of the late Ariel Koga and Wilhemena Scott Weldon. He was a graduate of Presbyterian College and held a master’s degree from Furman University. Prior to coming to Manning he was superintendent of schools at McCormick and Sharon, South Carolina. He was a teacher and coach for many years in South Carolina Public Schools. He served as a director of the Sumter-Clarendon County Mental Health Assn. and was active in many other civic organizations. He was a former president of Manning Lions Club and was a Mason. He served in many capacities in the Manning Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Jenrose Pressley of Abbeville, South Carolina; three daughters, Mrs. J.J. (Rose) Felmley of Dayton, Ohio, Mrs. J.M. (Mary) Hagan of Columbia, South Carolina, and Mrs. Jim (Koga) Pendarvis of North Augusta, South Carolina, and seven grandchildren; four brothers, A.K. Weldon of Hartsville, John W. Weldon of Atlantic Beach, Florida, Hugh W. Weldon of Columbia, and Karl S. Weldon of Columbia; four sisters, Mrs. Philip Porcher of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Ray Johnson of Columbia, Mrs. Virginia Scott of Hartsville, (Emma Graham and Sara Brearley, but who was the wife of Ray Johnson) and a number of nieces and nephews including the Rev. Philip Porcher of Sumter. Funeral services will be conducted at 5:00 o’clock Friday afternoon from the Manning Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in the Manning Cemetery. [1, 2, 3] | |
