In April 2022, Sumter's three Rotary clubs - Sumter Rotary Club, Rotary Club of Sumter-Palmetto and Rotary Club of Sumter Sunrise - celebrated 100 years of humanitarian service in the community and announced a new project to renovate the clubs' Liberty and Main streets' corner contribution to the City of Sumter in 2005. A construction contract was approved by the City of Sumter last November with 3D Dirtworks at a cost of $679,933 for the Rotary Centennial Plaza improvements. Sumter Rotary Club raised $70,000 at its 2022 gala for the project to assist, according to The Sumter Item archives. The plaza was originally created to match the city's downtown rehabilitation efforts in the early 2000s, and this project will continue rehabilitation efforts with a more modern design that will honor the legacy of Sumter Rotarians dating back 100 years. The project will include new pavers, planters, landscaping, a redo of the existing fountain and added sidewalk to the green space at Rotary Centennial Plaza. Assistant City Manager Howie Owens said the projected completion date is in early summer.  [2]
