Members of the Suber Marshall UMC Men's Club will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mr. Auld died Sunday, January 1, 2006. Born October 3, 1921, he was a son of the late William Auld and Jesse Fanning. He was reared in Springfield, S.C. where he graduated from high school in 1939. During WW II, he volunteered for service in the Merchant Marines and served as a radio communications officer in the Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters of operations. He continued on duty until 1946. He later served twenty-eight years in the South Carolina Army National Guard. By a combination of initiative, talent and opportunity, he worked his way through a series of positions in the commercial construction business as estimator and engineer, eventually retiring as the vice-president of Marchant Construction Company. His construction projects included schools, hospitals and other substantial public buildings in the Midlands area. Mr. Auld was an active member of Suber Marshall Memorial United Methodist Church where he was loved for his gentle and kind spirit and respected for his strong faith in God. During his nearly fifty year membership he served as lay leader, board member, Boy Scout leader and Sunday School teacher. He also served in other Christian and community endeavors, such as the Gideons and the Springfield High School Restoration project. He was an avid reader, a lover of Scotland, a genealogical researcher and a writer. Mr. Auld married Estelle Fowler in 1948, and enjoyed fifty-seven years of marriage until the death of his beloved wife in March of 2005. His five sons feel great debt of love to their mother and father for their exemplary examples of committed marriage and generous, compassionate lives. Their daughters-in-law treasured and loved Bill and Estelle.
