John William "Jay" Powell, 88, husband of Mary Eleanor Bagnal Powell, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, April 30, 2011, at the home of his daughter in Florence. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Frank R. Powell and the late Annie Mae Lide Powell. Mr. Powell knew Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. He was a founding member of Harmony Church in Sumter and served as an elder for many years. He was a graduate of Edmunds High School and Clevenger Business College and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He retired as a manager with Palmetto State Life Insurance Co. and as courier from National Bank of South Carolina. Survivors beside his wife include four children, Teri P. Atkinson (Ken) of Surfside Beach, Mike Powell (Beth) of Sumter, Molly Shorter (Jim) of Florence, and Bonnie Keels (Shonn) of Myrtle Beach; twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one brother, Frank R. Powell Jr. of Sumter. He is predeceased by his great-grandson Trey Watry. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Harmony Church with the Rev. Bob Norris and the Rev. Drew Choate officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Harmony Church. Memorials may be made to Harmony Church, P.O. Box 1878, Sumter, SC 29151.
