Ruth B. Lide
Ruth B. Lide COLUMBIA - Funeral service for Ruth B. Lide, 96, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Central United Methodist Church, Florence, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Marion. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mrs. Lide died at home at Still Hopes on Wednesday July 3, 2013. Born to Homer and Ruth Easterling Bethea near McColl, S.C., Sept. 20, 1916, her family later moved to Marion where her father was bookkeeper for the Coca Cola bottler. She graduated from Marion High School and Winthrop College and taught at Schneider School in Columbia in the 1940s. She married Dr. L.D. Lide on March 27, 1943, before he left for U.S. Army service in France. After World War II, they moved to Florence where she lived for more than 60 years. Her husband predeceased her in 1986. She was a strong proponent of education and civic engagement. She was a member, officer, patron and trustee of many organizations, including the Florence Museum, Camellia Garden Club, Garden Club of South Carolina, Junior League, Red Cross, Palmetto Trust, National Trust, Nature Conservancy, St. David Society, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was given the 1997 Mary Mildred Sullivan service award by the Winthrop Alumni Association. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, and attended Washington Street United Methodist Church after she moved to Columbia in 2009. She was an avid traveler, bridge player and gardener, particularly enjoying the years she spent as a flower show judge. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends at the beach. Surviving are her sons, Lanneau D. Lide (Mary) of Columbia, William B. Lide (Janet) of Pleasanton, Calif.; five grandchildren, Thomas Lide, Elizabeth Aravena (Patricio), Sara Lide, all of Columbia, Laura Lazzareschi (Nic) of Winchester, Va., Brad Lide (Bri) of Texas. The family would like to thank her caregivers for the past two years, especially Melissa Rowson and Terry Matlock.
