| HIST | Charles owned extensive plantations in St. Stephen’s Parish, his home being called “Mattesee.” In 1762 he was a commissioner for erecting St. Stephen’s; and for many years he was a Justice of the Peace. In the years 1757, 1758, 1759, 1760, and 1768, he was a member of Assembly, and in 1775 he sat in both sessions of the Provincial Congress. WILL OF CHARLES CANTEY In The Name of God Amen State of South Carolina Sumter District I Charles Cantey being weake of body but of perfect mind and memory-and knowing it is appointed fore all men Once to Diy-I do make and ordain this to be my last will and Testament- Revoking and Difsenulling all others-- Imprimis I do first give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Mary Cantey one negroe man paris one small stock of Cattle which remains in her former marke one small stock of hogs in my own marke one Brown Felly by name of peticoats-also one third of the present Crop of provisions one tract of land containing two hundred and Sixty two acres being the tract I now live on---I give unto Thomas Baggs Five Shillings------I give and bequeath unto his three Daughters Namely Merial America-Mary Elizabeth and Elvira Baggs-one negro boy name Moses-which is to remain with said Baggs untill his youngest Daughter Elvira Baggs arrive at the age of fourteen years then the negro Moses is to be sold and the mony arriving from said sold Is to be Equally divided between the above named three Daughters-- Itim I now give and bequeath unto my son Gorge Cantey and My son Charles Cantey-all the residue remainder of my property be it rale or persinal wheare ever it may be found to be Equally Divided between the said Gorge and Charles Cantey- I do further make and Declare Acknowledge and have appointed my son Gorge Canty and my son Charles Canty to be my sole Executors of this my last will and Testament made and signed this Twenty first day of November one thousand Eight hundred and Eight--- Charles Cantey (SEAL) Signd Sealed and acknowledged in the presents of us-- Sarah Sanders Gershon Benbow Evan Benbow Recorded in Will Book A Pge 75 Recorded 18th Day of Feb. 1809 Wm Taylor Ordy Bundle 23 Pkge 9 [3] | |
