VIRGINIA W. LONG
MOUNT PLEASANT -- Virginia Williams Long, 91, widow of William Ashley Long, of Mount Pleasant, passed away on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009.
The relatives and friends of Virginia Long are invited to attend her memorial service at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eastbridge Presbyterian Church. Burial will be held in Beaufort National Cemetery at a later date.
Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Mount Pleasant Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the church after the service.
Mrs. Long was born Sept. 8, 1918, in Sumter, a daughter of the late Robert Charles McFadden Williams and Lucile Phelps Williams. She served in the U.S. Army Women's Corps and was a member of the East Cooper New Comers Club. After moving to Mount Pleasant, she joined Eastbridge Presbyterian Church. She was a resident of the Sandpiper Independent Retirement Community of "The Village" for 11 years. She was an avid bridge player.
With her husband, Virginia lived in Hawaii for more than 40 years, eventually moving to Shattin in the new territories of China for three years. Together they traveled extensively throughout Asia and Europe. Their journeys led them to live in South Africa, as well as Portugal among others. In 1998, Virginia and her husband moved to Charleston to be close to family in the area, and eventually their daughter, Ginger, moved from North Carolina to Charleston to be near them and the rest of the family.
She is survived by her daughter, Virginia P. Gibson of Mount Pleasant; a son, David L. Long of Kaneohe, Hawaii; two grandchildren, Meredith Buckendahl and Shea Gibson; and two great-grandchildren, Maile and Braydon Buckendahl.
The family requests that memorials be made to Eastbridge Presbyterian Church, 3040 N. Highway 17, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464.
