HATFIELD Mary Ellis Hatfield, 94, widow of Lucian Herbert Hatfield Jr., died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at a local nursing facility. Born in Spartanburg, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Melton Ellis and the late Rose Cherry Ellis. Mrs. Hatfield was a member of Wise Drive Baptist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, West Virginia University School of Nursing Alumni Association and a retired neonatal nurse with Toumey Regional Medical Center. She was a former member of Northside Memorial Baptist Church. Surviving are her daughters, Mary Rose H. Spradley of McBee and Susan H. Saunders of Prosperity; her son, Michael Ellis Hatfield of Greenwood; a brother, James Hughes of Anderson; 19 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dora Helen Donald, and a son, Lucian Herbert Hatfield III. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Dearld Sterling and Michael Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in the Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.
