| HIST | of Summerville, South Carolina Date Published: July 9, 2008 ELIZABETH NETTLES SUMMERVILLE -- Elizabeth "Liz" Nettles, 65, of Summerville, wife of James P. Nettles Jr., died Monday, July 7, 2008, at her home in Berkeley County after a courageous six year battle with cancer. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, 11001 Dorchester Road, Summerville. A luncheon will follow after the funeral mass from noon until 1 p.m. at the church. Rite of Committal with final commendation will follow in St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery in Sumter at 4 p.m. Presiding will be Father Guerric Heckel, Father Kevin Walsh and Abbott Stan Gumula. Pallbearers will be Donald Nettles, Jason Prince, Mark Shirley, Stephen Nix and George Winkle. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Frank Brescia and Dr. Joseph Ewens and their staffs, Scottish Society of Charleston and the Knights of Columbus. Friends may call at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. today with a rosary service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mepkin Abbey, 1098 Mepkin Abbey Road, Moncks Corner, SC 29461 or a charity of one's choice. Mrs. Nettles was born Aug. 6, 1942, in Anderson, the only child of the late Ellie DuRant Brunson and Mamie Rothrock Brunson. She attended Sumter County public schools, graduating from Edmunds (Sumter) High. She attended Furman University and graduated from the University of South Carolina. She was past president of Sumter Jaycee-ettes, past president of Evening Pilot Club of Sumter and Docent at Mepkin Abbey. She traveled and worked with her husband in the Knights of Columbus, Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree and Ancient Order of Hibernians. She was former secretary and member of the board of the Charleston Scottish Society and a working member of the Charleston Scottish Games. She was owner of Knot Just Celtic embroidery and sewing and a retired teacher. She taught high school English, starting in Batesburg-Leesville, followed by Mayewood, Hillcrest, Furman and Chapin. She also taught in the technical college systems in Sumter, Columbia and Ocala, Fla., as well as Charleston and Moncks Corner. She was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Summerville. Survivors including her husband of 43 years are a son, James P. Nettles III of Charlotte, N.C., and his fiancee', Adrianne McDonald; a daughter, Ruth Marie Suehle and her husband, Scott, of Durham, N.C.; and a granddaughter, Hannah Elizabeth Suehle, her inspiration in her long battle with cancer.
