Nell Catherine Summers Heriot ORANGEBURG - Funeral service for Nell Catherine Summers Heriot, 86, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial at 3:00 p.m. in Old Rembert Church Cemetery in Woodrow, SC. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at the funeral home. Mrs. Heriot passed away Monday, May 21, 2012, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born on January 17, 1926 in Cameron to Samuel Jacob and Fair Snelson Summers. She graduated high school in Cameron and attended Lander College until marrying James Davison Heriot on October 11, 1947. They made their home in Bishopville until Davison was called back into the Army at the beginning of the Korean War. Her life was changed forever when, after the war, Davison decided to make the military his career. They traveled to Japan, Cuba, Panama, Peru, as well as California, Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia for his assignments with the Army. It was in Japan that she first became interested in flower arranging. She was a member of the American Orchid Society, South Carolina Camellia Society, and South Carolina Landscape Critics. She was a student of Ikebana and a National Flower Show Judge. She held offices in the South Carolina Garden Club, Columbia Garden Club and her local garden club. She always said, "If Davison will grow them, I will arrange them." Together they had many hours of enjoyment from her hobby and his love of horticulture. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church from 1971 until moving to Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg in 2002 where she resided until her death. Nell and Davison had five children. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Hugh Tyler of Tucker, Ga.; sons, James Davison Heriot Jr. of Oviedo, Fla., Dr. Kirk Chandler Heriot of Columbus, Ga.; ten grandchildren, Wes Tyler, Brett Tyler, Chris Heriot, Ryan Bley, Davison Heriot, Chandler Heriot, Katie Heriot, Ashley Heriot, Cameron Heriot and Connor Heriot. She is also survived by a sister and two brothers, Anne Turner of Greenville, Sam Summers of Cameron and David Summers of Conway; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her devoted husband, Davison; her daughters, Dr. Cathy Summers Heriot and Lynda Grey Heriot; her sister, Caroline Prather; and her brother, Thomas Summers.
