Alfred Tisdale Sr., died Tuesday, April 5, 2011, in Indianapolis, Ind., near her daughter. Born Dec. 5, 1924, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Robert Pierce Yates and Lottie Ellen Pigford Yates. Mrs. Tisdale was an active member of the Mayesville Presbyterian Church and the Mayesville community for 36 years, returning to Sumter and Grace Baptist Church following the death of her husband in 1983. She loved spending time with family and friends as well as working with young people; some of her volunteer service included time as a local church and presbytery youth advisor. Mrs. Tisdale's professional career was rich and varied, including positions at Shaw Air Force Base, Black River Electric Coop., and the Mayesville Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) in earlier years. She also owned and operated the Mayesville Beauty Salon for many years. Later, she served as school secretary for Thomas Sumter Academy and then as immunization secretary at Sumter County Health Department. Mrs. Tisdale was noted for her warm hospitality and caring welcome of all, both young and old. Her constant greeting was, "Come in the house, the coffee pot is on!" Throughout life, she was devoted to her beloved family. In retirement years, she especially enjoyed Bible study, concerts, and bus trips with friends from community and church. Surviving are sons, Louis Tisdale (Sande) of Mayesville; Alfred Tisdale Jr. (Nora) of Stonington, Conn.; daughter, Ellen Tisdale Weimer (George) of Greenwood, Ind.; brother J.P. Yates (Ernestine) of Sumter; five grandchildren, Lindsey and Sam Louis Tisdale of Mayesville, Michael Weimer (Jaime) of Bloomington, Ind., Leonora Tisdale of Durham, N.C., and William A. Tisdale III (Alison) of Waterford, Mass.; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Lydia Mitchell, Rose Tomlinson, Virginia Wise, Sybil Kirby and Tony Davis, and one brother, Robert Vernon Yates. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Mayesville Presbyterian Church with interment immediately following in the Black River Cemetery in Mayesville. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home on Miller Road in Sumter. Memorials may be made to Mayesville Black River Cemetery, P.O. Box 441, Mayesville, SC 29104 or to a charity of one's choice. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
