Russell Littlejohn Strange Sr., 89, widower of Margaret Cubbage Strange, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010, at Rice Estates, Columbia. Born in Sumter on Nov. 21, 1921, to William Muldrow and Leona McKnight Strange, Russell was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, W.M. Strange Jr.; and sisters, Corrina Kolb (Richard) and Annie Laurie Davis (C.K.). On Oct. 22, 2007, the death of his devoted wife, Margaret Leslie Cubbage Strange, ended a union of 67 years. In 1954, Russell entered Columbia Theological Seminary after a career in sales. Ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1957, he served as pastor of churches in Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia. A friend of Bill W's for 60 years, Russell expanded his ministry to helping recovering alcoholics, serving as director of Atlanta Union Mission, founder of Potter's House, Jefferson, Ga., and director of Hope Harbor, Danville, Va. The Rev. Strange was a welcome speaker at AA meetings throughout the Southeast as well as state and national conventions. A member of Trinity Presbytery, the Rev. Strange attended Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. Survivors include one daughter, Doris Covert (Wayne) of Columbia; two sons, Russell Strange Jr. (Carol Macus) of Columbia and William Allen Strange (Carolyn Ferneyhough) of Conyers, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, Columbia, with Dr. Ellen Skidmore and Dr. Travis Webster officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Sumter Cemetery, Sumter. The family deeply appreciates devoted caregivers Betty and Rosetta and employees of Rice Estate, and also special thanks to Tom, Bill, Chuck, Jim and Dan.
