HARRIET P. CHITWOOD
MANNING – Harriet Plowden Chitwood, 97, widow of James William Chitwood, died Friday, May 29, 2009, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter.
Born May 14, 1912, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Thomas English and Hattie Zeigler Plowden. She was a lifelong member of The Presbyterian Church at Manning.
Surviving are two daughters, English Furse and Harriet Snelling, both of Manning; three grandsons, George Harold Furse III (Lauri) and William Chitwood Furse (Judy), both of Manning, and Charles Frederick Snelling III (Kathy) of West Columbia; a granddaughter, Harriet Snelling Paugh of Lexington; five great-grandchildren, Thomas English Furse (Elisa), Mark Lauriston Furse (Lindsay), William Chitwood Furse Jr., Ladson Blythe Furse,and John Louden Furse; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, James William Chitwood Jr.
Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Manning Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home, 15 Old Georgetown Road, Manning.
