| HIST | Robert N. DuRant WEST COLUMBIA -- Robert Nelson DuRant, 92, of The Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, West Columbia, died May 28, 2012. His body was donated to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Shandon Methodist Church. Born July 5, 1919, in Manning, he was a son of Charlton and Elizabeth Nelson DuRant. He graduated from Manning High School, Furman University and the School of Law of the University of South Carolina. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order and Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity. On Feb. 14, 1942, he married Julia McLain, who provided a lifetime of happiness. He practiced law in Manning 1941-1942 and 1946-1950 as a member of the firm of DuRant & DuRant; DuRant, DuRant and Plowden; and later, DuRant, DuRant and Rogers. While in Manning, he was a member of Manning United Methodist Church and was a teacher of the men's Bible class; member and post commander of Williams-Burgess Post No. 68, the American Legion; member of the 40&8 in Sumter; Manning Lions Club; the South Carolina State Guard; chairman of the Clarendon County War Price and Rationing Board; and life member of St. Peters Lodge No. 54 of Ancient Free Masons. He volunteered as a private in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and was released from active duty as a captain in 1946. He returned to active duty in 1950 and received a regular Army commission. He retired as a lieutenant colonel after serving as chief trial attorney, Department of the Army, and chief contact appeals branch of the Judge Advocate General's Office, Washington, D.C. In Germany, he served as a Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent at Frankfurt Central Chapel and president of Northern Area Command Men of the Chapel. In France, he was staff judge advocate of Fourth Logistical Command, president of Verdun Parent-Teachers Association, and was awarded the Verdun Medal by the City of Verdun. He was made a colonel three times <0x2014> by the president of the United States, the governor of South Carolina, and the governor of Kentucky. From 1967 to 1974, he was executive vice president of the South Carolina Bankers Association. He also served as president of the Southern Conference of Bankers Associations and president of the South Carolina Society of Association Executives. When the South Carolina Bar Association was formed in l975, he became the first executive director and served in this position until his retirement in 1985. He served two terms as president of the National Association of Bar Executives, and also served as a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association. In honor of his father, Charlton DuRant, he and his wife established the DuRant Public Service Award with the South Carolina Bar Foundation. It is now considered the highest honor awarded to a member of the South Carolina Bar. As a member of Shandon United Methodist Church since 1957, he was a member and chairman of the administrative board; president of the Methodist Men; chairman of the annual fund campaign; chairman of the staff-parish committee; member of the finance committee and council on ministries; a Stephen minister; usher; greeter; and member of the Joy Sunday School Class. He served as a member and chairman of the board of trustees of Epworth Children's Home; member and board member of the Columbia Rotary Club; and board of Richland County March of Dimes. He was also a member of the Palmetto Club, Forest Lake Club, the Cotillion Club, and Quadrille and former member of the Summit Club and Spring Valley Country Club. He was a life member of the Military Officers Association of America and served twice as chairman of the Still Hopes Resident Council. For more than 55 years, he grew pine trees in Clarendon County, and was an active member of the South Carolina Forestry Association. Surviving are his wife, Julia McLain DuRant; sons, Robert Nelson DuRant Jr. and wife, Suzi, of Johns Island and William Charlton DuRant and wife, Lynn, of James Island; daughter, Julia DuRant Kimbrell and husband, Curtis Kimbrell III, of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Louise Kimbrell Lindsay, Robert Gray Kimbrell and William Charlton DuRant Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Gerda Lindsay and Alexander Curtis Lindsay. He was predeceased by a daughter, Louise; a sister Lynn DuRant Griffith; and a brother, Charlton DuRant Jr. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Epworth Children's Home, P.O.
