ADAM FLASH / SUMTER ITEM FILE PHOTO Posted Saturday, November 16, 2024 6:00 am By TIM LEIBLE tim@theitem.com The Sumter High Athletic Hall of Fame is expanding once more, as the Gamecocks prepare to induct a new class on Dec. 14. Last year, SHS inducted a new class for the first time in more than a decade. They didn't want to have another wait before adding to their hallowed halls. The Gamecocks will add five major sports figures this year, a coach and four players, with the Class of 2024. The SHS baseball program will be well represented as former head coach Brooks Shumake and pitcher Matt Price join the fold. Carl Baker Jr. thrived in both football and baseball at Sumter High en route to the hall of fame. Fellow gridiron star Ricardo Colclough and basketball standout Brittany Starling round out the exceptional class. Shumake and Price teamed up as the Gamecocks won the 2006 SCHSL 4A state championship. Price went on to lead the Sumter P-15's to two American Legion World Series before starring at South Carolina. Suiting up for the Garnet and Black, Price served as the closer for the back-to-back College World Series champion Gamecocks in 2010 and 2011. He also helped them get back to the CWS in 2012 before graduating. He was inducted to the University of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022 and joins fellow two-time Gamecock Jordan Montgomery in the SHS hall. Shumake continued an excellent career at Sumter High after Price graduated. He led the Gamecocks to a total of three state championships, adding titles in 2011 and 2014. He won 389 games at Sumter High. Baker Jr. is the second Carl Baker to be inducted into the Sumter High Athletic Hall of Fame in as many years. His father was a longtime coach at Sumter High, and the pair teamed up as coach and player in the early 1990s. Baker Jr. was a star on both the gridiron and diamond, earning a trip to the Shrine Bowl before signing to play both sports at Clemson. Colclough was a star defensive back at Sumter High in the late '90s. He played two seasons of junior college ball before transferring to Tusculum, where he caught the eye of NFL teams. The All-American was eventually drafted in the second round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2004, winning the Super Bowl with the franchise the following year. Starling was a standout hooper at Sumter High, though she missed her final season because of an ACL tear. She then went to USC Upstate and blossomed. She was inducted into the college's athletic hall in 2022, averaging a double-double as a senior and finishing fifth in the nation in rebounds. Starling went on to play professionally overseas, primarily in Finland, Brazil and Belgium. [1, 3] | |
