| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina JAMES EPPS NEWMAN JR. Posted Saturday, May 13, 2023 6:00 am James Epps Newman Jr., husband of Edith Segars Newman, passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2023. Born in Lakeland, Florida, he was a son of the late James Epps Newman Sr. and Margaret Louise Barnes Newman. Jimmy was a 1961 graduate of Mayewood High School. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. After attending one semester at Spartanburg Junior College, he decided he would rather move home and "dig ditches" than finish college. After working with his father and uncle in the paving and grading business, he decided to go into business for himself and, along with his cousin Claude Newman, opened Newman Construction Inc. He worked hard and was successful running Newman Construction for more than 30 years. During his prime years, he loved to work and made feeding his family a top priority. He was a loving and devoted husband to Edie and a generous and caring father to his children and grandchildren. His biggest and greatest accomplishment was being one of the first in his family to put all three children through college. He worked hard every day to make the lives of others much easier. He was a dependable and loyal family man who will be missed by his family very much. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."Survivors include his wife of 59 years; three children, James Epps Newman III (Laura), Cynthia L. Newman and Kim Newman Saunders; eight grandchildren, Sarah Bloxham (Andrew), Sam Newman, Mary Newman, James Newman, Frank Halloran, Maggie Blazo (Jarod), Marshall Saunders and Georgia Saunders; and a great-grandson, Timothy Bloxham. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Terry Lee Newman and Carroll Edwin Newman. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bob Brearley officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. The family would like to thank all of the staff at Covenant Place and Caris Healthcare. In addition, we would like to extend our appreciation to Minnie and Fletcher Leaf, Jeanne Hodge-Griffith, Chrystal Williams, Veronica Jordan and many others along the way. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 140 Stoneridge Drive, Suite 640, Columbia, SC 29210 or to First Presbyterian Church, 9 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements. [2, 4, 5, 7, 8] | |
