BARKLEY Letha Jeanette Barkley, 86, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at a local nursing facility. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Pharoah and Maude McLeod Avins. She was twice married, first to the late Clifton Morris Ardis and then to the late Joseph D. Barkley. Survivors include seven children, John W. Ardis of Sumter, Dorothy Blanchard of Hemingway, Clifton Ardis of Sumter, Tommy Timmons (Mary) of Sumter, Vickie Plowden (Butch) of Sumter, Gale Richardson (Mickey) of Sumter, and Glenn Barkley of Sumter; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ester Mae Ardis, Jewell Griffin and June Morris, all of Sumter; and a brother, Jimmy Avins of Sumter. She was preceded in death by a son, Henry Ardis; four sisters, Inez Barwick, Easter Ardis, Naomi Hodge and Gernell Brown; and two brothers, Buck Avins and Russell Avins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Tommy Atkinson and the Rev. Tommy Timmons officiating. Burial will be in the Weeks Cemetery in Pinewood. Pallbearers will be Will Ardis, Tommy Ardis, Jeff Avins, Wilbur Avins, Buddy Ardis and Cris Ardis The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Timmons, 567 Clifton Road. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home & Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.  [3, 4, 5, 7, 9]
