He was born in Lamar, a son of the late Ralph Mitchell Smith and Scotter Bell Davis Smith. He was a self-employed mechanic and loved all animals, working with his hands, fishing and having good fellowship and fun. He will always be remembered as a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Charles Smith and his wife, Penny, and Larry Smith and his wife, Jeanie, both of Sumter; a daughter, Amanda Smith Hodgson and her husband, John, of Spotsylvania, Va.; three brothers, James W. Smith, Willie Ray Smith and Billy Smith; two sisters, Zada Merideth and Elizabeth Dill; and four grandchildren, Rusty Lloyd and his wife, Manning, of Charleston, Megan Smith of Sumter, Jonathan Hodgson and Alyssa Hodgson, both of Spotsylvania. He was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the First Church of God with the Rev. Ron Bowers officiating. Burial will follow in Lamar Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bullock Funeral Home.
