  HIST	of Sumter, South Carolina Fred O. Mathis Jr. COLUMBIA — Fred O’Dell Mathis Jr., 67, widower of Linda Kaye Finley Mathis, died Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born Feb. 17, 1945, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Fred O’Dell Mathis Sr. and Emily Geddings Nesbitt. Mr. Mathis was retired from Campbell Soup Company and Santee Print Works. He was a diehard sports fanatic and especially loved South Carolina Gamecocks baseball and football. Survivors include a son, Dell L. Mathis (Beth) of the home; two grandchildren, Dell L. Mathis Jr. (Kelly) of Sumter and MaKaylin Elizabeth Mathis of the home; a great-grandson, Dell L. “Tripp” Mathis III; two sisters, Audrey Clowrey of New Jersey and Emily Rae Osteen of Sumter; three brothers, Ted Nesbitt (Diane) of Smoaks, Wayne Mathis (Cheryl) of North Myrtle Beach, and Gary Nesbitt (Brenda) of Sumter; two sisters-in-law, Martha Prosser (Ronald) of Manning and Shirley Crawford of Sumter; a brother-in-law, Fred L. Finley Jr. of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Morris officiating. Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Smithville Evangelical Baptist Church, c/o Jimmy Baker, 225 Pinecrest Drive, Sumter, SC 29153.
