SHORTER MANNING – Raymond Eugene "Gene" Shorter, 76, husband of Julia Frances Davis Shorter, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born June 14, 1931, in Sumter, he was a son of the late James M. and Ruth Craft Shorter. He was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran and retired from the S.C. Department of Agriculture. He was a member of American Legion Williams-Burgess Post No. 68, the VFW, DAV, Order of the Eastern Star, a Mason and Shriner, and member of Manning First Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of Manning; two sons, Tony R. Shorter and Michael E. Shorter and his wife, Lydia, of Manning; a daughter, Peggy M. McConnell of Manning; a brother, James Mitchell Shorter Jr. of Sumter; three sisters, Lula Ingram, Linda Glasscock and Juanita Pack, all of Sumter; four grandsons, Jason Shorter of Charleston, Justin Shorter of Manning, Richard M. McConnell Jr. and Raymond J. McConnell, both of Kingstree; two granddaughters, Kayla Ray Berger and Kristin Leeann Shorter of Manning; and a great-grandson, Ethan Andrew Berger. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack L. Shorter. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning with the Rev. Jerry Cottone officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Memorials may be made to the Free Will Baptist Home for Children, P.O.
