| HIST | of Gable, South Carolina of Sumter, South Carolina ROY MCCATHERN Posted Tuesday, January 5, 2021 6:00 am Roy McCathern, 86, husband of Nadine Brunson McCathern, died on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born on Aug. 19, 1934, in Mayesville, he was a son of the late Chalmers O'Neal McCathern and Sarah Louise McCoy McCathern. He served as a staff sergeant in the Army National Guard from 1955 to 1959. He was a member of Northside Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, property committee chairman and youth Sunday school teacher. He was the owner of McCathern's Garage. He was a mechanic and amateur racer at Sumter Speedway. Following his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture in his shop. He loved spending time at his lake house with his family. Survivors include his wife of 65 years; five daughters, Vicki M. Barwick (Johnny), Patti M. Welch (Steve), Donna M. Twine (Smokey), Sheri M. McDowell (Scott) and Nancy M. Ferriell (Mark); 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Chalmers O. McCathern Jr. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Johnson officiating. In accordance with COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting no visitation at the home. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
