Confederate States of America- Civil War He was twenty years old when he enlisted in the Wee Nee Volunteers in July of 1861. This outfit got its name from the old Indian name for the Black River, which flows through Williamsburg County. He left this unit to join the Williamsburg Light Dragoons, a cavalry unit. This unit combined with parts of Harlee’s Legion to become Company I of the 4th Regiment, South Carolina Cavalry in December of 1862. This regiment was in the Brigade commanded by General M. C. Butler, a very dashing cavalry officer. The 4th was sent to Virginia and took part in the defense of Richmond in 1864. It fought in the battles of Trevillian Station, Hawe’s Shop, Cold Harbor, White House, and Burgess Mill. The regiment was sent to Columbia (South Carolina) in January of 1865. It fought against Sherman’s army and surrendered with Johnston’s army at Greensboro (North Carolina). [1] |
