Because he was elected an ordinary from Williamsburg County, he was granted a discharge. From a letter written by his commanding officer, W. R. Brockington, requesting that he be granted a discharge, we learn that he was 45 years old, had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair.  [1]
