- Since William is the immigrant ancestor for so many Bracey descendants in the US, he is of particular importance. He is one of the keys to jumping the Atlantic. William is believed to have had two sons, Francis and William of Prince George County, Virginia. The records of Warwick and Elizabeth City Counties were mostly lost during the Civil War, as were also those of Prince George County. That expalins the lack of much documentation and the need to use circumstantial evidence.
Quote from the late Verna Bracey of LaCrosse, Virginia, May 11, 1981: "My present point of view is that William Bressie (Bracey), nephew of Quaker William, may have been the son of Thomas Brasie who was witness to the will of Anthony Jones, Aug. 16, 1649 (Isle of Wight Wills & Administrators Book A, p. 25)." No other records have been found regarding this Thomas Brasie.

23 Feb. 1687/8. Jno. Britt & Katherine his wife doe in Cort Enter that they this day having attended this Court to acknowledge a Deede of Sale of a Pcell of land to Wm Bracey Junr. but the said Bracey not appeareing with the Deed of Sale they therefore Cannot Pforme the same (Surry Co., VA, Order Bk 1671-91).
28 Apr. 1691. Wm. Brecey, Junr., 720a on both sides of Cyprus Swp., in the Up. Par. of Surry Co for importation of 15 persons (Patent Bk. 8, p. 127). ["Junior" just meant "younger", not necessarily "son of."]
24 Feb. 1695/6. Peter Montague relinquished land in Warwick Co., which had been deeded to him by his father-in-law, Thomas Merry, and he and his wife, Elizabeth, gave power of attorney to "our brother-in-law" William Bressie to acknowledge the relinquishment. William Bressie presented the request to Warwick County Court. (Father-in-law could refer to the father of one's spouse, or to a step father. "Brother-in-law" could refer to a brother of one's spouse, to a step brother, or a half brother, etc.)

22 Jan. 1699. Will of William Bressie of Isle of Wight Co.,m VA, bequest wearing Apparell & Linnen to his two nephews Hugh Bressy and William Bressy to be equally divided between them. Will proved 9 June 1701 (I of W Wills, Deeds, Vol. 2, p. 431). (This is the will of William Bressie, the Quaker).
24 Apr. 1700. William Bressie, 128a Warwick Co., near the Oaken Swp., beg. at Mr.Thomas Merry's new dividend, for importation of three persons, incl. William Bressie (Patent Bk. 9, p. 261). [William Bressie had left Surry Co. and was living in Warwick Co.]
1 Mar. 1702/3. Thomas Merris (Merry) made a deed of gift to his daughter Elizabeth Montaque, "the relict of Peter Montague", with reversion to his sons Thomas and Peter (Middlesex County Deed Book 2, p. 506). (Thus Peter montague was then deceased. He was an ancestor of Wallis Warfield Simpson, later Duchess of Windsor. He is believed to have been the grandson of Peter Montague (1603-1659), the immigrant, who was the son of George Montague of Boveny, Burnham Parish, Buckinghamshire, which adjoins Dorney. )
21 May 1702. A Petition of William Bressie of Warwick County praying allowance for his Negro Slave named Toby who was killed Psuant to an Act of Assembly Anno Domini 1692 intituled an Act for Suppressing Outlying Slaves (Journals of the House of Burgesses of Virginia, 1695-1702).
29 Dec. 1703. Elizabeth Montague, widow of Peter Montague, was then married to Rice Custis, who on this date "for love I bear my wife Elizabeth Custis," made a deed of gift to Thomas and Peter Montague, sons of Peter Montague, deceased. Witnesses to this deed were William Bressie and Thomas Merry, Jr. (Middlesex Co. Deed Bk. 3, p. 15).

7 Oct. 1715. John Simmons, Gent. of Southwarke Parish to William Andrews, yeoman, for 5 shillings, 430a on south side Cyprus Swp. in Southwarke Parish (part of a patent of 720a on both sides of Cyprus Swp. granted to William Bracey Jr. on 21 Oct. 1690). Recorded 21 Dec. 1715 (Surry Co. Deeds, Wills, Etc. 6, 1709-15, p. 253).
9 Aug. 1717. William Andrews, Gent. of Southwarke Parish to John Grantham of the same, 200a on south side of Cypress Swp. and the Horse Meadow Br. (part of 720a on both sides of Cypress Swp. granted to William Bracey Jr. on 21 Oct. 1690). Recorded 19 Feb. 1717 (Surry Co. Deeds, Wills, Etc. 7, 1715-30, p. 96).
21 Aug. 1717. In a suit brought by Francis Bracey his next friend agt. John Burtell, admr. of James Burtell, dec'd., in an action upon the case .... Deft. failing to appear, attachment awarded plt. with cost. Ret. ct. for furth tryall (Elizabeth City Co., Court Order Bk. 1715-21).
19 Feb. 1717/8. Frances Bracy by Wm. Bracy & Suit agt. Joh. Burtell ... in an action upon the case 5 pds. Refd. to next Ct. by reason Capt. ? his atty. is sick (Elizabeth City Court Order Bk. 1715-21, p. 90).
20 Mar. 1717/8. Judgmt confirmed agt. John Burtell Adm. of James Burtell dec'd for payment of four bbls of Tar to Francis Bracey with costs ...(Elizabeth City Court Order Bk. 1715-21, p. 100).
12 May, 1718. Will of Thomas Merry. Legatees - sons Prettyman, Thomas, John; daughters Elizabeth and Mary; cousins William and Mary Brasey. Exs. Friend and kinsman William Tucker, if he should die, friend Samuel Roberts. Recorded 18 June 1718 (Elizabeth City Will Bk. 1715-21, p. 11 Estate appraised p. 119). Account of estate, May 1718 (p. 193). At Thomas Merry's death, his eldest child was nine years old, the youngest fifteen months. (The term cousin often meant nephew or niece, as well as cousin. This indicates that there was a relationship of some sort between the Bracey, Merry, and Tucker families).
1718. William Bressie said to have appraised an estate in Prince George Co. (Verna & Carstairs Bracey, 1955).[This latter William Bressie was likely a son of William Bressie of Warwick.]

22 June 1722. William Hatchill, 83a, Elizabeth City Co; adj. his own; John King; land of William Bracis (Bracie), now in possession of John Gibbins; and Thomas Baker (Patent Bk. 11, p. 143). [Since William Bressie's land was in Warwick Co., this grant to William Hatchill in Elizabeth City Co. adjoining Bressie seems to indicate that Bressie's land was on the county line.]

19 Mar. 1726/7. Will of Samuel Watts. Legatees - son Mathew; son Thomas; wife Elizabeth; daughter Judith. Exs. were wife Elizabeth and father-in-law William Brasie (Bressie). Recorded 21 June 1727. Wit. Rt. Armistead, Thomas Batts, William Tucker (Elizabeth City Will Bk. 1704-30, p. 72).[So, William Bressie had a daughter named Elizabeth.]
28 Sept. 1728. William Rogers, 28a, Warwick Co., adj. his own; land of Maj. William Rascow; William Braceis; and William Hatchill (Patent Bk. 13, p. 331).
Apr. 1729. Settlement of estate of Thomas Mallicote, 1729, Warwick Co. Nathaniel Hoggard, Anthony Armistead, John Jones, Gent., and Wm. Bressie were appraisors of the estate (Tyler' Quarterly, 1941).
20 Feb. 1738. Thomas Collier & wife Elizabeth, of Southwarke Parish, to Henry Collier of same, 230a (being part of a patent granted to William Bressie Jr. and by him conveyed to said Thomas Collier) bounded by Horse Meadow Br., Cypress Swp., John Collier and sd. Thomas Collier. Rec. 21 Mar. 1738 (Surry Co. Deeds).
17 Mar. 1745/6. In inventory of the Estate of William Bracey dec'd was taken: prize money, 27.6.5; mare, 3.0.0; saddle, 1.6.6; total value, 31.12.11. Signed by Mary (x) Bracey. Recorded 19 Feb. 1746 (Norfolk Co. Will Bk. H, 1742-9, p. 191). [It is unclear why this inventory was recorded in Norfolk Co., except perhaps that William's grandsons were in Norfolk Co. at that time.]
4 June 1752. A deed from Mary Bracey to Mary Morrice was proved by oath of William Marion, one of witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded (Warwick Minute Bk. 1748-62, p. 170).
23 Jan. 1756. [torn] "...at the Great Bridge in Norfolk County, advertises for sale at Hampton 328 acres in the lower end of Warwick County, formerly belonging to William Bracey, dec." (Virginia Gazette, 23 Jan. 1756, p. 3, col. 2).
